We Need Real HEALTH Care Reform

Health care reform shouldn’t be about politics – instead, the focus should be on ways to keep people well. Currently, our health care system is based on responding to acute problems, urgent needs of patients, and pressing concerns, and as a result we spend minimal time working to prevent illness and disease. Chiropractic, however, focuses on prevention. Not only does your doctor of chiropractic want to keep you pain free, he or she also wants to focus on preventive care, like smoking cessation, eating better and getting more exercise. Without the inclusion of chiropractic care in any reform plan, people will take more medications, undergo more unnecessary surgeries and suffer more pain. That is not a solution.

President Obama has reaffirmed his desire for Congress to pass a comprehensive health care bill by the end of the summer. Now is the time for your elected officials to hear from the people they serve – YOU – that chiropractic is an essential component to any health care plan.

Please encourage your friends and family to join ChiroVoice, and then suggest they contact Congress to share their support for chiropractic.

Beauty Products

If you pick up your favorite personal care products and look at the ingredient list, chances are you’ll see components in the paraben family—a group of chemical preservatives—which, according to new research, could potentially take a toll on your health.

Parabens are commonly used in lotion, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and cosmetics. The most frequent impact of parabens is skin irritation, but it has also been linked to allergic reactions, cancers, developmental/reproductive toxicity and endocrine disruption.*

Check your labels for these specific parabens: benzylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, sodium methylparaben and sodium propylparaben.

There are, however, several natural alternatives that can be used as preservatives in personal care items. Look for products that contain grapefruit seed extract, vitamin E, vitamin A or vitamin C.

Daschle: Health Care Reform Long Overdue

In a recent Roll Call article, Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) criticized the current state of the U.S. health care system and suggested a few “principles upon which we can address the growing health care crisis in America…” He explained that our current system costs 40 percent more than the second-most-expensive country and yet the quality of our health care has continuously declined. Sen. Daschle wrote that to combat these problems we need to have coverage for all Americans and that “we must change the paradigm from illness to wellness.” Read the full story.
